Wheels will be on fire in Muscat (11-16 February 2013)

Jan 22, 2013

Most of the top riders in professional cycling are now confirmed to compete in the Sultanate of Oman between 11 – 16 February 2013 for the fourth edition of the Tour of Oman. This race, which is still a relative new comer on the international circuit, has already proven itself as a key early season race with six testing stages including long flat roads hugging the striking coastline to the Sea of Oman, to steep climbs thorough mountainous terrain.
The routes unveiled during the Muscat Festival Press Conference today [15 January 2013] by Saif Suba’a Al Rashadi, the Chairman of the Oman Cycling Association and representative of the organisers Muscat Municipality, will offer the riders a 938.5 kilometre, six-stage course.  The awe-inspiring climb up the Jabal Al Akhdar (Green Mountain) at the close of the 4th stage also returns. With 5.8 km at an average gradient of 10.3%, this will be the ultimate endurance test of the race. The cyclist that dons the red jersey - general ranking leader - at the end of this stage should be close to victory two days later on the Matrah Corniche.
"The Tour of Oman is such an amazing example of what potential and willpower together can achieve in such a short space of time.  The line-up for the event this year, the competition’s fourth year, is simply outstanding. It is all thanks to the willingness of the Omani authorities and the incredible reception of the Omani people." States the legendary cyclist and race organizer Eddy Merckx.
Sultan Hamdoon Al Harthi, Head of Muscat Municipality, the organizers of both the festival and the Tour of Oman also welcomes the cyclists. “February in Oman is no longer known just for its glorious warm temperatures, but also for the Tour of Oman.  Though young - celebrating its fourth year in 2013 - it is already seen as a critical pre-season race.  That such a recent addition to the international professional cycling calendar should already attract many of the greatest names: Tom Boonen, Fabian Cancellara, Mark Cavendish, Alberto Contador, Cadel Evans, Philippe Gilbert, Vincenzo Nivali, Joaquim Rodriguez, Peter Velits and Bradley Wiggins, is a huge source of pride.  It is also testament to the ideal racing conditions offered by Oman’s landscape and weather, and, to our country’s determination to invest in its youth”
Saif Suba’a Al Rashadi also commented that “it takes dedication and years of training to become an elite sportsmen. This is the fourth year that we have hosted this event and we are pleased to announce the increase in the number of teams competing to eighteen with up to one hundred and forty four riders taking part.”
